    Pain Points of Fundraising

When you’re part of a startup, the funding landscape is often synonymous with challenges to be conquered. The recent 24six9 meetups raised some powerful insights into that, bringing a refreshing perspective, one that will help you see that the usual narrative surrounding pain points in raising funds doesn’t always have to dominate the conversations. Instead, let’s focus on the opportunities and solutions that can emerge from these experiences.

New founders often see raising capital as a fierce competition, with high stakes. On some level, there is truth to that, given that our region boasts of the highest number of startups incorporation per year. However, it's crucial to shift that mindset from pain points to embracing it as part of the entrepreneurial journey itself. Each challenge is a steppingstone towards growth, learning and opportunity to innovate.

One of the most valuable aspects of the 24six9 Founders Community is the open ability to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs.

Share your experiences, gain knowledge and learn about best practices and use the 24six9 community to cultivate the environment you need to flourish. Don’t just focus on the hardships of fundraising. Instead, allow the 24six9 community’s regular discussions to help you tweak strategies, find success stories and resources that have helped fellow entrepreneurs navigate their own journeys, and use it to all to your advantage.

The 24six9 community agrees on knowing when to engage with investors. Unless a new investor shows genuine interest by backing up their words with a binding agreement and clear, measurable conditions, it’s often not worth your time. Much like the startup landscape, the investor landscape is also filled with individuals feeling their way around.

Understanding investor intelligence is just as important as building a foundation for investor talks. Many investors aren’t going to be aligned with your vision and may not have the tools to align either. This can lead to frustrating conversations and unrealistic expectations. They may come with the common narrative about how they require low valuations because only one in ten investments pay off.

But consider this: If an entrepreneur only made one good decision out of ten, they’d be out of business. An investor’s struggle with decision-making has no business becoming your burden.

Another thing to keep your footing strong is not entertaining unrealistic growth expectations. It's disheartening to witness investor preferences for a rapid growth trajectory while undervaluing a slower but more sustainable business plan. Sometimes, the appeal of steady growth far outweighs the allure of quick returns. It also often leads to losing out on the opportunity to innovate, stifling conversations towards projects that may have real-world value.

When it comes to elevator pitches, ensure that investors are willing to commit time to understand your business. A one-liner may have you get attention in a time-crunch, but a willing investor would be interested in comprehending your idea further. It’s also important to not just rely on a presentation, or sending slides before you speak to an investor. They tend to skim through them and feel they already know everything.

Take charge of the presentation flow, and avoid taking questions in the middle, especially if they require more than a simple yes or no answer.

Many 24six9 startups claim to have learnt this the hard way!

Furthermore, it’s important to control the timeline yourself, as the founder. IF an investor is aware that you’re running low on funds, they might use that to pressure you into a better deal for them. It’s crucial to maintain control over the negotiation process, and when to take part in decision-making. Establishing boundaries early on can help protect your interests and maintain your authority in the relationship.

Ultimately, remember your value and that it’s YOU offering investors a meaningful opportunity to invest.

This isn’t just about receiving a handout; you’re looking for someone to invest in your vision.

In this dynamic, neither party is inherently above the other. Mutual respect leads to a healthier and more productive relationship.

Keep these takeaways in mind when you’re in the fundraising phase, and approach engagements with clarity and confidence. And if you’re unsure about anything, know that the 24six9 community is brimming with mentors and helpful peers who can offer guidance at all times.
